Is Pilates COVID safe?

This is a confusing time for instructors and clients alike in the fitness industry. The guidelines for fitness classes have changed numerous times since the first announcement of coronavirus restrictions, leading many clients to understandably be wary of attending classes! Hopefully, this post will clarify things as they stand in the UK, and give those who are unsure some confidence in attending their favourite classes, to help them stay in fighting form.

Current lockdown measures

Currently, the UK is under lockdown restrictions which means no group fitness classes can take place in person. Gyms are closed as well as indoor community spaces, but individuals are permitted to exercise in outdoor spaces - with 1 person from another household. This means instructors and personal trainers can give classes outdoors on a 1:1 basis - however, because it is now November and the lockdown is lasting until at least the 2nd of December, outdoor sessions may prove chilly!

Many instructors are now offering online fitness classes via Zoom and Skype, which of course is only limited by internet connection and in some instances, space in your home. Pilates and Yoga are ideal for Zoom classes, as the majority of exercises are done with little space required. You will probably find you can transition to these online classes without compromising your workout, though weights and small pieces of equipment (exercise ball, mat etc.) may prove a worthy investment.

After Lockdown?

Should the Government return to the Tier system after this lockdown, we’ll update with the various restrictions you might find at your in-person Pilates or fitness classes. In any case, professional Pilates instructors will take the restrictions and clients’s health seriously to make sure classes are as safe as possible to attend.

Pilates and Immunity

Rather than your Pilates classes posing a danger to your health, they can actually boost your immune system, which is all the more important in this difficult era of COVID-19.

As Lynne Robinson, author of Pilates for Life explains, the lymphatic system and respiratory system are of highest importance to our immune system. Pilates movements help to filter toxins and waste products produced by our cells out of the body through the lymph nodes. Pilates also teaches you how to breathe more deeply, mindfully and effectively - which supplies more oxygen to your blood and will keep you healthier in the long run. And finally, Pilates fanatics will know and love the absolutely serene, relaxed feeling they get after class. The calming, mindful effect of a great Pilates session can reduce long-term stress, which in turn has been proven to reduce the likelihood of us becoming ill.

Conclusion

Hopefully we’ve answered some questions as to whether Pilates is COVID-safe.

TLDR: Yes it is!

Zoom Pilates classes are a fantastic way to keep occupied during lockdown, as well as boosting our immune systems and keeping us healthy. After lockdown, Pilates and fitness instructors will treat your safety and national restrictions with utmost respect and look forward to welcoming their clients back to in-person classes.
