The Pilates Reformer
A key piece of equipment sets Pilates apart from other similar exercise systems: the Pilates Reformer. This large piece of kit can seem intimidating to some, but it really doesn’t need to be! I’ll be going over the ideas behind the apparatus as well as some key benefits of its use, so you can decide if training with a Reformer might work for you!
Creation of the Reformer
The Reformer was designed and created by Joseph Pilates as he developed Contrology, which would later become Pilates. You can read more about him in my previous blog here. He originally intended the Reformer to help him teach his pupils to perform the movements correctly, but gradually an entirely separate set of Pilates exercises were developed for the apparatus.
Features of the Pilates Reformer
Not too much has changed in terms of the design of the Pilates Reformer since its inception. The basic concept is a fixed frame, with a moving platform called a carriage. A set of springs can offer variable resistance to the carriage, which you move against using strength. Ropes and a footbar also facilitate a range of exercises, and blocks and a headrest keep you secure and comfortable!
Benefits of the Pilates Reformer
The benefits of exercising on a Pilates Reformer are numerous. As instructor James Shaw explains, Reformer exercise can ‘create internal pressure to elongate the spine, joints and muscles which then leads to greater flexibility, strength, stamina and a more balanced posture.’
Another great aspect of Reformer exercise is that it can be suitable for many body types and ability levels - giving great benefits to sport rehab clients, sedentary office workers, pro athletes, and pre- and post-natal people.
Exercise on the reformer will help build a strong and stable core, as well as increase flexibility and arm and leg strength. You will really see improvements in your muscular strength and endurance with consistent training! Summary
Hopefully the Pilates Reformer seems like less of a confusing contraption to you now! As I’ve mentioned, there really is so much that it offers, and it can take your Pilates matwork and general practice to the next level.
